2018 Super Rugby Round 16 Preview & Betting Tips

May 31st 2018, 11:27am, By: matta91

The Super Rugby Finals are fast approaching, and Round 16 of the season promises to be an exciting one! We look at all the games in Round 16 of the 2018 Super Rugby season and give our betting tips below.

Super Rugby Round 16 Betting Tips

Highlanders vs Hurricanes (Friday, Jun 1 5:35pm AEST)

The Highlanders and Hurricanes New Zealand rivalry continues this Friday at Forsyth Barr Stadium. Last week, the Hurricanes were well beaten by the Crusaders13-24 at AMI Stadium to end their long run of 10 straight wins. In the Highlanders last game, they just won against the Reds 18-15. In the head to head, the Hurricanes have won 3 straight against them, which were played in Wellington. At this venue, the head to head is 4-3 to the away side since 2010 and the Highlanders won the last matchup 17-16. But based on current form, I can’t see the Hurricanes dropping this. The Highlanders are inconsistent as they only just beat the struggling Reds and were smashed by the Waratahs previously. They’re also 4-8-1 ATS versus the Hurricanes so I like the away side at the line.

Blues vs Rebels (Saturday, Jun 2 3:15pm AEST)

The Blues host the Rebels at Eden Park on Saturday. As it currently stands, the Rebels are in finals contention and need to win this. They were impressive against the Sunwolves at AAMI Park in a 40-13 win, which made is 2 straight wins. The Blues haven’t lost against them in NZ and beat them 56-18 in Melbourne last year. They should be refreshed from the bye and looking to end their season with a few upsets. But the line of 9.5 points is high for a 3-9 team and they’re also 0-6 at home. The last 2 meetings in NZ have been wins to the Blues by only 6 and 4 points. In the end, the Rebels should enjoy scoring points against their defence which is ranked 2nd last in Super Rugby. So I like the underdog line for the Rebels which is 5-1 against the Blues since 2010.

Chiefs vs Crusaders (Saturday, Jun 2 5:35pm AEST)

The New Zealand rivalry between the Chiefs and Crusaders continues this Saturday at FMG Stadium, Waikato. The Crusaders are starting to really heat up before the finals after a 9th straight win last week. So they'll look to continue their good form on the road against the Chiefs. Last week, the Crusaders were victorious against the Hurricanes at AMI Stadium and snapped the ‘Canes 10 game winning streak. Meanwhile for the home side, they have a 3-2 record in their last 5 matches. Last time out, the Chiefs were victorious the Waratahs at this venue 39-27. But the Crusaders are 3-0 against them and won 45-23 earlier this season. They’ve also won all 3 games by 6.5 points or more, which is the line for this contest. So it’s hard to back against the in-form Crusaders at the moment.

Reds vs Waratahs (Saturday, Jun 2 7:45pm AEST)

The Reds are set to take on the Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium in their Australian rivalry matchup on Saturday. The Reds are aiming to avoid a 3rd straight defeat and have a 1-4 record in their last 5. They are scoring just 20.58 points per match, which ranks 15th in Super Rugby. They also concede 30 points per match. So it is not looking good for this matchup against the high scoring Waratahs. NSW also have a 1-4 record in their last 5 matches but have played tougher opponents. They’ve played 4 straight against NZ sides and knocked off the Highlanders 41-12 two weeks ago. They should have also beaten the Crusaders (up 29-0). Against the Reds, they smashed them 37-16 in mid-April and have won the last 8 meetings. So they should win once again and cover the line, which the Reds are 4-9 against in night matches against NSW.

Brumbies vs Sunwolves (Sunday, Jun 3 4:05pm AEST)

In this matchup, the 4-8 Brumbies and 2-10 Sunwolves face off at GIO Stadium on Sunday. For the Brumbies, they produced a great away win over the Bulls and will start as massive favs at home in this one. Meanwhile for the Sunwolves, they looked poor against the Rebels in a 27-point defeat. Which was disappointing after 2 straight wins. They’re still yet to win on the road in Super Rugby and it’s hard to see that happening on Sunday. Their last result in Canberra went to the Brumbies 66-5. However, the home side hasn’t covered the line at home in day games since 2010 (0-9). The Sunwolves are 5-1 against the line in away games and 8-3 after a loss. Sportsbet has the best line at the moment and I’ll take it on.
