2017 Wimbledon Men's Betting Preview

July 2nd 2017, 6:38pm, By: andyrosos

Roger Federer will be hunting a record 8th Wimbledon title when the 2017 edition of the Grand Slam gets underway Monday, the 3rd of July. Currently tied with Pete Sampras on 7 titles in the Open Era, Federer will enter the tournament as favourite to win the trophy ahead of in form rivals Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

After winning the Australian Open back in January, Federer had concerns for his general fitness and longevity so he decided to skip the clay court season along with the French Open. This should mean the 35-year-old will be extremely fresh coming into Wimbledon.

Federer is a worthy favourite, especially after his amazing throwback performance in the Australian Open, beating his long time rival Rafael Nadal in an epic final. The elder statesmen have had a resurgence in the early part of 2017 with Federer winning the Australian Open followed by Nadal taking out the French Open in one of the most dominant Grand Slam performances in history.

TIP: Roger Federer to win title - $3 at Sportsbet

The air of invincibility that Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray definitely seems to have faded as well. Combined, the pair have only reached the final of a Grand Slam on two occasions in the last four events compared to the previous four when they reached six.

Regardless, the two champions can never be written off and at around $6 a piece there’s some great value there, especially considering Murray is the defending champion. I’d be more inclined to take the World No.1 in Murray over Djokovic, grass is by far his favourite surface whereas Novak prefers the hard court.

Every quarter seems to have at least a few solid chances barring probably quarter three. Nadal should roll through this quarter pretty comfortably especially given he is as healthy as he’s been in a long time at the moment. Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori look to be his only threats, both of whom have only made one semi final of a Grand Slam each since the start of the 2015 season.

TIP: Rafael Nadal to win quarter three - $1.91 at Ladbrokes

On the Aussie front, Nick Kyrgios is shaping up as the best chance and will welcome the grass court season happily. It’s his favourite surface and he has had some great performances at Wimbledon in the past. The only person holding him back is himself but if he decides he wants to give it his all this year there’s no reason he cant sneak through a semi final run at the least. With Andy Murray and Stan Warwinka both in his quarter it’ll be tough but he has defeated both of them on grass before and at $7 there’s plenty of value there.

TIP: Nick Kyrgios to win quarter one - $7 at Ladbrokes

Milos Raonic will likely have a clear-ish run to at least the quarter final with just Federer and Alex Zverev the main threats in the quarter. Raonic performs well on grass, reaching the only Grand Slam final of his career last year at Wimbledon. He should go fairly deep so a bet on him to have the most aces of the tournament is good value.

TIP: Milos Raonic most tournament aces - $3.28 at Sportsbet
