2017 French Open Preview & Betting Tips

May 22nd 2017, 6:59pm, By: andyrosos

The 2017 French Open kicks off next week from Roland Garros in Paris. It’s a much-anticipated event and marks the first time that the nine time winner of the event, Rafael Nadal has been arguably fully healthy in the lead up for two years. The Women's side is completely open with Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams both out of the event.

French Open Men's Singles Betting Tips

Nadal has faced another hot favourite, Dominic Thiem, in two lead up tournaments in the past few weeks, winning the Madrid Open Final in straight sets before losing the Italian Open Quarter Final in straight sets to the hard serving Austrian.

The two clay court specialists along with perineal powerhouses in Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are the four favourites for the tournament with young guns Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios close behind.

Nadal’s form of late can’t be denied, a runner up finish at the Australian Open followed by the Madrid Open win has shot him back up into the top four in the world, hot on the tail of Swiss Stan Wawrinka. His arch-rival and 2017 Australian Open winner Roger Federer will miss the tournament after suffering a knee injury that will keep him out of the sport for six months.

Regardless of the loss to Thiem, which could have been seen as a premeditated early exit to prepare for the Grand Slam, Nadal has dominated the clay court season so far and a tenth French Open win would only solidify his place as the most dominant player on the surface of all time. Hard to look past the dominance of Rafa here.

TIP: Rafael Nadal to win the French Open - $1.83 at Ladbrokes

Dominic Thiem has proved he is hot form on the orange surface so far this season with the final appearance in Madrid followed by reaching the semi-final in the Italian Open. The big serving Austrian could have a favourable draw by facing either Stan Wawrinka or the out of form Novak Djokovic in the semi-final and avoiding Rafa until a possible final matchup. Back him to make the final at $5.50.

TIP: Dominic Thiem to make the final - $5.50 at Sportsbet

French Open Women's Singles Betting Tips

On the women’s side of the draw, the title is there for the taking with Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova both ruled out of the tournament. With the two dominant figures in world tennis out, Simona Halep has opened as the favourite at $5.

Halep is fresh off a win in the Madrid Open against Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic and a runner up placing in the following Italian Open to stamp herself as the inform clay court women’s player at the moment.

In her current form and with the light on draw, we have to side with the favourite here and back Halep to win at a healthy $5.

TIP: Simona Halep to win the French Open - $5 at Sportsbet

The surest thing of the tournament might be the dominant force that is Chan Yung-jan and Martini Hingus to win the ladies doubles. The two have won the last two tournaments of the WTA Tour in the Madrid and Italian Open and look odds on to win their 4th title of the year. Markets should open later in the week

TIP: Hingus and Yung-jan to win the French Open Women’s Doubles
