2017-18 Big Bash League (BBL07): Round 6 Preview & Betting Tips

January 8th 2018, 4:11am, By: andyrosos

A great 3-1 round of BBL07 betting tips in Round 5 takes our season tally to 11-9 through the first five rounds. We’ll be looking to continue our solid form this Monday, the 8th of January as Round 6 of the 2017-18 Big Bash League season gets underway.

BBL07 Round 6 Betting Tips

Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers (Monday 6.10pm AEDT)

The Hurricanes have won their last two games against the Thunder and the Strikers on the back of two massive performances by opening batsman D’Arcy Short. Short belted scores of 97 and 96 in the two wins, and now leads the BBL07 runscorers list with 242 runs at a strike rate of 162.42. The Hurricanes bowling is a bit of an issue, however, having allowed 356 runs in their last two games.

The Sixers remain winless through five games so far in BBL07, sitting above the Melbourne Stars on percentage alone as they head into Round 6. It’s been an extremely disappointing season for the Sixers, who now have basically no chance of making the finals with their 0-5 record. Without captain Moises Henriques in the squad, the Sixers batting line-up looks extremely thin, with Nic Maddinson and Jordan Silk the only batsman to surpass the 100 run mark so far.

The Hurricanes have opened as $1.62 favourites for the game at home, and rightfully so given the form of D’Arcy Short. All-star import Jofra Archer has been great with the ball in BBL07 but is still yet to impress with the bat. We feel a big game coming from him and another good outing from the Hurricanes at home here.

TIP: Hurricanes to win - $1.62 at Sportsbet

Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Renegades (Monday 9.20pm AEDT)

A massive game between two of the top teams in the league in the second game of the Monday night double header. The Scorchers will host the Renegades, with the winner improving to five wins on the season, which coincidentally was the number of wins Perth claimed to finish on top of the BBL06 ladder last season. With the longer schedule this year, five games likely won’t be a first place finish, but the winner of this game will basically punch their ticket to the finals.

Perth have been impressive once again this season, proving that the WACA is still a fortress. They have won both of their games there so far this season, although they have only defeated the two winless teams in the Sixers and Stars. Even though they are 4-1 going into this week, their batting line-up still looks a little thin in our opinion with the Marsh brothers still out of the team through international duties.

The Renegades have been near perfect on the season so far, with their only loss coming to the Scorchers in Melbourne back on the 29th of December. They’ll be looking for redemption here and are coming off a great win in the Melbourne derby on the weekend. Their bowling attack continues to dominate teams with Brad Hogg, Kane Richardson and Mahammad Nabi all playing great support roles to arguably the BBL07 MVP through the opening five rounds, Dwayne Bravo.

Bravo has been fantastic, taking 12 wickets at a great economy to help the Renegades hold their opponents to an average of just 138.8 runs through the first five games. They are slight favourites once again here and we like them to win over in Perth.

TIP: Renegades to win - $1.77 at Ladbrokes

Adelaide Strikers vs Melbourne Stars (Tuesday 7.40pm AEDT)

After we picked them to struggle in our pre-season tips, the Adelaide Strikers have won five of their six opening games and currently sit atop the Big Bash table. They defeated the Sydney Thunder on Sunday night in another dominant performance with the ball. After setting a fairly modest total of 158, the Strikers held the Thunder to just 133, making it the 3rd time in six games that they have kept their opponents under 140.

On the contrary, we picked the Stars to be one of the best teams in the league at the start of the season, and through five games, they are yet to win. A tough loss in the Melbourne Derby on Saturday night all but extinguished the Stars chances of playing finals this season, as high profile Stars Glenn Maxwell, Kevin Pietersen and Ben Dunk all found some form with the bat but ultimately couldn’t put enough on the board, scoring just 157 off their 20 overs.

The fact that the three big Stars players scored 120 runs between them in the Melbourne Derby is promising. We feel a team with this much talent just can’t stay winless for long, even if they are away from home for this one. In saying that, it’s hard to bet on a winless team, so we are staying away from this one all together.

TIP: No bet

Brisbane Heat vs Hobart Hurricanes (Wednesday 7.40pm AEDT)

Apart from a 91 run slip up in their fourth game of the season against the Strikers, the Heat have been one of the most dynamic batting teams in the league. They put up 191 runs in their last game against the Scorchers on Friday night as Chris Lynn, Brendon McCullum, Joe Burns and Ben Cutting all put up valuable runs in the win. All four batsmen are in the top ten for strike rates in BBL07while spinner Yasir Shah is leading the way with the ball.

At the time of writing, the Hurricanes are yet to play their first Round 6 matchup against the Thunder. But if they were to win that game, as they should as favourites, this will be a massive match for them in the context of the season. Two wins for the Hurricanes in Round 6 would put them right in the finals mix.

Even without seeing how the Hurricanes fair in their first Round 6 matchup, it’s hard to look past the Heat at home here. The Heat seem ahead of the curve in the T20 scene. Going all out with their best two batsmen from ball one and trying to dominate the first power play seems the way to go in this format, and all it takes is one of Lynn or McCullum to go off and the Heat can cruise to 180. They shouldn’t lose this one, especially at home.

TIP: Heat to win - $1.60 at Sportsbet
